If there’s one power that’s most essential to our freedom - It’s our Power of Attention.
It’s everything! Wherever we choose to place our attention, that’s what begins to take shape in our life.
You’ve heard the popular saying - “life grows where water flows”.
Here’s a new one for you, “Life grows where our attention flows”.
Attention is the water of our life experience.
Attention is a key component of developing greater awareness. Our level of awareness is only as good to the extent we’re fully present with what’s happening around us and what we’re experiencing.
How often do we have a conversation with someone and find our attention fleeting elsewhere? Instead of really listening to the person in front of us, our minds start to interpret, form a response or simply fly off to away to someplace else that our brain was distracted by.
Our degree of attention is a direct indicator of our degree of awareness.
We think the mind is the way it is and that’s what we have to deal with. We do have to deal with the cards we have been dealt but it’s also true that the mind is highly malleable. It’s a tool and can be trained.
Just like how an athlete trains for a marathon, we must train our minds to become more attentive.
Instead of the mind running the show and determining where it wants to take you, we gradually develop a higher capacity to be with the moment and direct our mind / attention at will. This is essentially what the initial practice of meditation enables.
If this is an area of growth for you, then declare an intention to be more attentive.
Affirmations are a way of directing our attention towards a desired outcome. They’re not magic, they’re just a command to our mind. The more often we practice the command, the more attention we put on the subject and gradually the more energy we direct towards the growth of that quality within us.
Here’s a helpful affirmation - “I intend to be fully present with my life at all times”.
Reflect on this self-reflection question several times a day to strengthen the power of attention in your life.
Ask yourself - “Where is my attention now?”
