From Consumptionto Nourishment

“If we connect with the sacredness of life, we don't need to be taught to take care of the environment. We don't need to be taught to be considerate of what we purchase and how we consume. We will still consume but the nature of our consumption will change. It will change from an addiction to a growth based consumption. One that helps us be the better version of ourselves, for ourselves and for others around us.” - Thich Naht Hahn
Refining the Way We Live
Most of the advice we hear about "living green" or "being conscious" focuses on the external: Do this, don't do that. But Thich Nhat Hanh suggests that the real work happens internally.
When we view life as sacred, our habits naturally realign. We stop consuming to fill a void and start nourishing ourselves to fuel our inner growth.
The Shift:
Mindless Consumption: Reacting to an impulse, seeking a temporary "high," or buying into the noise of the world.
Growth-Based Consumption: Choosing what nourishes the soul, supports the body, and allows us to show up more fully for those around us.
We are still participants in the world. We still eat, we still use tools, and we still create. But when the nature of that participation changes, we no longer need rules to be "good", we simply act in harmony with ourselves and the environment around us.
A Moment of Reflection
Today, instead of focusing on what to give up, try focusing on what to connect with. When we appreciate the sacredness of the moment, and the people in front of us, the way we treat the world changes without us even trying.
What does "growth-based consumption" look like in your daily life?
Whether it's the media you take in, the food that fuels you, or the energy you give to others, let it be a choice that makes you a better version of yourself.
